Swallows Wood

Swallows Wood is a nature reserve near Hollingworth in Tameside, straddling the border between Greater Manchester and north Derbyshire. The 60-acre site contains semi-natural woodlands, meadows, ponds and marsh areas. It sits where the Hollingworth and Waste Lodge reservoirs once stood until they were demolished in 1987. Arnfield Reservoir, the lowest of the Longdendale Chain reservoirs, lies nearby. The wood forms part of the wider Longdendale landscape with moorland views beyond. The site is threatened by a proposed Longdendale Bypass that would pass through the reserve. For nearly 30 years campaigners have fought to save the wood. Tameside Council has now committed to planting 10,000 managed trees to shift the woodland gradually away from the bypass route. Despite the threat, the wood remains a valued spot for wildlife and walkers. Its location on the fringes of the Peak District National Park adds to its appeal. Visitors find a mix of habitats including damp woodlands, open meadows and small ponds. The varied terrain supports different plant and bird species. Walkers enjoy wide views over the woods and surrounding moorland. The nearby Arnfield Reservoir attracts birdwatchers, with lists of sightings maintained by local observers. The reserve offers quiet paths for gentle exploration close to the Peak District.
