Weston Museum

Weston Museum stands in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. It occupies the former offices and showrooms of the Weston Gaslight Company in Burlington Street, a Grade II listed building designed in 1912 by local architects Hans Fowler Price and William Jane. The museum’s collection began in 1861 when William Mable, a shoemaker, gathered local specimens after seeing finds from Worlebury Hill taken away to Taunton. His early night school and growing collection led to the town’s first museum in the Albert Memorial Hall in 1863. After several moves and name changes, the present building opened in 1975 and was refurbished in 2017. The museum is worth the journey for its long community roots and recent regeneration. A £1.1 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, along with support from Arts Council England and local campaigners, transformed the site. Friends of Weston Museum lobbied to keep the building open and raised funds through marches and letters. Nerys Watts of the Heritage Lottery Fund called the project “transformational” for the town. The redevelopment added a gallery named after William Mable and new art installations in the courtyard. Visitors find four permanent galleries covering geology, archaeology, art and social history, plus two spaces for temporary exhibitions. Clara’s Cottage, a Victorian cottage rescued from the site, stands beside the museum. The William Mable Gallery hosts changing displays, and the courtyard features artworks by Mary Flower and a wood print mural created with local schools. The building’s original stable yard and industrial features remain visible inside the modern displays.
