Schimmelkopf

The Schimmelkopf is a mountain on the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. It stands in the Schwarzwälder Hochwald, part of the Hunsrück range. The summit reaches 694.8 metres above sea level. It is the second highest peak in Saarland after the Dollberg. The mountain’s name also appears as Weiskircher Höhe in some sources. Its slopes lie within the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The Schimmelkopf’s height was long given as 695 metres in the 20th century. More recent measurements in 2005 showed it is 0.6 metres lower than the Dollberg. Despite this, official maps still show the Dollberg’s height as 695.4 metres. The mountain’s watercourses include the Burkelsbach and Siebenbornbach to the north. To the west are the Holzbach and Schlittentaler Bach, while the Kübelbach flows on the southern side. Visitors reach the summit along paths through mixed forest. The peak offers wide views across the Hunsrück and into the Saarland countryside. Nearby villages include Weiskirchen, Mandern and Waldweiler. The mountain’s gentle slopes make it accessible for walkers of all levels. The surrounding nature park adds quiet woodland and meadows to explore.
