Fleischhackerberg

The Fleischhackerberg rises to 1,222 metres in the Bohemian Forest of Upper Austria, near the village of Klaffer am Hochficht. Four river systems—the Moldau, Eidechsbach, Rotbach and Theinhörlbach—begin on its slopes. A 1.08-hectare natural forest reserve protects part of the summit woods. The entire mountain lies inside the 9,350-hectare Europe-protected Böhmerwald-Mühltäler zone. It also belongs to the 22,302-hectare Important Bird Area Böhmerwald and Mühltal. Geologists classify the peak as coarse-grained gneiss. Acid-loving beech forests cover the lower slopes, while spruce-fir-beech woods occupy the upper northern faces. On the south-east middle and lower slopes, woodruff beech forests appear. Waterlogged plateaus support wet spruce or spruce-fir woods, and scattered long meadows contain peatland complexes embedded in the woodland. The European long-distance trail E6, known here as the Nordwaldkammweg, crosses the summit ridge. A demanding 14.8-kilometre cross-country ski trail, the Hochficht-Loipe, also runs over the Fleischhackerberg. Hikers and skiers share wide forest tracks and narrow alpine paths that lead to open viewpoints across the surrounding high forest.
