Narrenkogel

The Narrenkogel is a 2,309-metre peak in the Stubai Alps above the Ötztal valley. It stands above the village of Umhausen and the higher hamlet of Niederthai, serving as the local mountain for both places. Two summit crosses mark its twin summits, and a rising ridge leads north-east to the Poschachkogel. The mountain’s slopes shelter Tirol’s tallest waterfall, the Stuibenfall, just below its flanks. Small wetlands and springs appear at the base, while in early summer pasque flowers and gentians brighten old hay meadows. Higher up a sparse Swiss-pine forest gives way to open ground just below the summit ridge. A walker can reach the top from Umhausen by following the Stuibenfall path, which joins the route from Niederthai. From there a 2.9-kilometre climb gains 764 metres in about two hours, ending at the summit with views over Niederthai and peaks rising above 3,000 metres. A short further ascent leads to the Poschachkogel.
