Archäologisches Freilichtmuseum Funkenburg

The Archäologisches Freilichtmuseum Funkenburg is a unique open-air reconstruction of a Germanic defensive settlement in Westgreußen, Thuringia. It sits on a flat spur of land that drops steeply on three sides, offering natural protection. Excavations between 1974 and 1980 revealed the site’s history as a fortified village from 200 BC to 50 AD. The settlement was defended by palisades, ramparts and ditches facing northwest. The museum opened in 2003 to bring this Iron Age world to life. Archaeologists found traces of sixty huts and about five hundred pits during digs at the site. The largest building measured eight by fourteen metres and likely belonged to the settlement’s leader. Pottery fragments suggest settlers came from eastern Germanic groups, while other finds show links to Celtic and Roman cultures. A local club began rebuilding the site in the 1980s, starting with a watchtower and later reconstructing walls, ditches, towers and palisades. The association worked with Thuringia’s Museum for Prehistory and Early History to plan the restoration. Visitors enter the outer bailey, which serves as the museum area, then pass into the main bailey. Here reconstructed houses, storage buildings, ovens and tools show how people lived and worked. Regular events let guests try Iron Age skills like pottery, baking, spinning, dyeing, weaving, net-making and archery. Volunteers dressed in period clothing demonstrate daily life, turning the site into a living centre for experimental archaeology. The steep slopes and reconstructed defences give a strong sense of how the original settlement looked and felt.
