Parish church Hohenzell

The parish church of Hohenzell stands in the village of Hohenzell in Upper Austria. The Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Michael belongs to the deanery of Ried im Innkreis in the diocese of Linz. It is protected as a listed building. The church was first recorded in 1283. A wide Gothic hall church was extended in the 16th century with a chapel resembling a side aisle. The bell tower was added to the southern corner of the choir in the Baroque period. The single-aisled nave has three bays and leads to a slightly recessed three-bay choir ending in a three-sided apse. In 1665 the Gothic ribs of the vaults were removed. The three-bay west gallery has a pointed arch and is vaulted with star ribs. The south and west doors are late Gothic pointed arches. The south door received a barrel-vaulted porch in 1665. The porch shows a fresco by Michael von Egidi Prinner dated 1736. The baptismal chapel was given a stucco decoration in the third quarter of the 18th century. The tower at the southern corner of the choir has a new onion dome with a lantern. The high altar from 1772 carries statues by the sculptor Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder. The pulpit from about 1720 also features figures in his style. A crucifixion group from 1753 and an annunciation group from 1732 were made by Franz Mathias Schwanthaler. Four Baroque figures stand in the choir. In the nave there is a Gothic statue of the Virgin and Child. The organ from 1864 with twelve stops was built by Franz Sales Ehrlich of Braunau. A gravestone in the nave shows Vicar Wolfgang Maierhofer with the Virgin and Child and the date 1533.
