Mosesbrunnen, Vienna

The Mosesbrunnen is a neoclassical fountain on Franziskanerplatz in Vienna’s first district. It stands in the middle of the square, framed by historic buildings and cobblestone paths. The fountain dates from 1798 and was designed by Johann Martin Fischer. At its centre rises a larger-than-life statue of Moses on a pedestal. Water spouts from a lion’s mask on the pedestal and cascades into the basin below. An older stone basin from the early 17th century forms the lower part of the fountain. The work is worth seeing for its clear design and the contrast between old and new. The over-life-size Moses statue commands attention above the basin. The lion mask and Israelites relief add detail to the pedestal. The earlier 17th-century basin beneath shows the fountain’s layered history. Fischer’s composition links the square’s architecture with the water feature. Visitors find a quiet spot surrounded by benches where the fountain’s water murmurs. The square itself is small and sheltered, making the monument easy to view from all sides. The mix of classical lines and worn stone gives the place a calm dignity. On sunny days the water glints against the pale pedestal. The site invites a moment’s pause before continuing through the nearby streets.
