Straßenbahnmuseum Halle

The Straßenbahnmuseum Halle sits in a former depot on Seebener Straße, built in 1898 as a six-track tram hall and later extended by three more tracks. The brick façade in yellow and red follows the plain style of late-19th-century utility buildings. A small two-and-a-half-storey administration block once stood beside the hall, now used as flats, while a coal power station and workshops have vanished. The museum is run by the Hallesche Straßenbahnfreunde e.V., which keeps around forty historic trams, buses and lorries in running order. On opening days in May to October visitors can ride a circular tour in restored vintage trams. Older vehicles once stored here after 1968 now form the core of the collection, joined by trams from other German towns such as Altenburg, Naumburg and Plauen. Inside the nine-track hall rows of trams stand alongside seven buses by Ikarus and IFA from 1956 to 1989. A 1961 GAZ Wolga taxi and a 1986 Trabant serve as dispatch cars, while a 1931 snowplough and a 1930 tower wagon show workaday rail duties. The brick walls echo the depot’s industrial past while the gleaming vehicles recall the city’s electric tram era that began in 1891.
