Burgstall Hohenlinden

The Burgstall Hohenlinden is a ruined spur castle on a small ridge 640 metres above sea level. It stands at the western edge of the Winterhalde wood between the villages of Höllwangen and Hohenlinden, about four kilometres north-north-west of Überlingen on the shores of Lake Constance. The site is a low mound with no visible masonry today. Archaeologists believe the original structure was a simple tower surrounded by an earthen rampart. Little is known about the castle’s history. No written records survive to show who built it or when. The name Burg an der Winterhalde appears in 19th-century local histories, but the building itself is never mentioned. Michael Losse’s survey of castles along the northern shore of the lake describes it as a modest medieval watch-tower. Alois Schneider’s study of fortifications in the Bodenseekreis likewise treats it as a minor site. Visitors reach the mound by a quiet forest track from Höllwangen. The clearing offers wide views across the lake and the rolling hills of the Linzgau region. A simple information board explains the castle’s probable form. The peaceful woodland setting contrasts with the vanished stonework, leaving only the shape of the spur and a sense of the past.
