Seamus Heaney Homeplace

Seamus Heaney HomePlace stands in Bellaghy, County Londonderry, on the site of a former Royal Ulster Constabulary barracks. The building was designed by W&M Given Architects to reflect the local vernacular style, using basalt stone, glass and wood. It opened in September 2016 and has since become a cultural landmark in Mid Ulster. The centre was built on land bought by Mid Ulster District Council in the late 1990s during demilitarisation. It measures 1,950 square metres and incorporates elements of the old barracks in its design. The centre is dedicated to the life and work of Seamus Heaney, the Nobel Prize-winning poet. It houses a permanent exhibition titled Seamus Heaney: Man and Boy, which includes personal items such as his school desk and a handwritten poem. The building also features a 190-seat performance space called The Helicon and a café. Visitors have included Charles III, Liam Neeson and award-winning poets, with 40,000 people attending in its first year. Inside, the first floor displays photographs and artefacts from Heaney’s life, while the second floor explores his poetry through word mobiles. The Open Ground exhibition links five locations in the area to his work, each with listening posts where his poems are read aloud. The centre hosts regular events, including a recent anniversary celebration attended by poets such as Paul Muldoon and Colm Mac Con Iomaire. The building’s design encourages community gatherings, with a paved circular area at the front.
