Kirche von Wölfnitz an der Saualpe

The Roman Catholic parish church of Wölfnitz stands in the small village of Wölfnitz, part of the larger municipality of Griffen in Carinthia. It sits at 1,127 metres on the southern slope of the Saualpe range, surrounded by a defensive wall with arrow slits. First recorded in 1237, the church is dedicated to Saint Michael and a war cemetery nearby holds graves of partisans from the Second World War. The building began as a Romanesque structure in the 13th century before Gothic alterations in the 15th century gave it a tall northern tower with slit windows, multi-light sound openings and a pointed east doorway under a steep stone roof. The nave’s eastern bays carry a net-ribbed vault on rounded piers, while the later western extension has a plain Baroque cross-vault. A pointed arch separates the nave from the single-bay choir, which ends in a five-sided apse and is roofed with 15th-century ribbed vaulting on corbels. Inside, the high altar holds a late-Gothic figure of Saint Michael, partly reworked and gilded, flanked by two 19th-century angels dressed in Baroque style. Visitors enter through a pointed south doorway with a wooden porch and walk past the graves of partisans laid to rest after the war. Inside, the walls carry small statues of Saints James, Joachim and Anne, while a sacrament niche on the north side of the choir is framed by a keel arch. The tower’s stone slates and the church’s slate roofing catch the light of the Saualpe, and the surrounding wall with its arrow slits adds a quiet reminder of the site’s long history.
