Duncansby Head Lighthouse

Duncansby Head stands on the north-eastern tip of the Scottish mainland in Caithness, Highland. The headland thrusts into the North Sea between the Pentland Firth to the north and west and the Moray Firth to the south. It lies about twenty kilometres east-southeast of Dunnet Head, the mainland’s northernmost point, and slightly north-east of John o’ Groats. The land is shaped by constant waves and wind, carving deep geos, caves and blowholes into the cliffs. The Duncansby Stacks rise as tall, narrow rock spires from the sea, formed over millions of years by the same forces. These stacks form part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest that stretches six and a half kilometres south to Skirza Head. The cliffs host thousands of seabirds in spring and summer. Puffins, guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes nest on narrow ledges, while grey seals and harbour porpoises frequent the waters below. Minke whales are sometimes seen passing close to shore, making the headland a prime spot for wildlife watching. The Northern Lighthouse Board built the lighthouse here in 1924 to the design of David Alan Stevenson. In 2024 it marked its centenary, still guiding ships with solar-powered automation after the foghorn was removed in 2003. Visitors reach the lighthouse by a minor road from John o’ Groats, the road’s farthest point from Land’s End. The headland is part of the North Coast 500 route, drawing hikers and photographers to its rugged scenery. Local folklore tells of sea spirits and ghost ships in the Pentland Firth, adding to the place’s dramatic reputation. The Duncansby Stacks were once considered for a nuclear test in 1953, but bad weather stopped the plan. The cliffs and stacks remain a powerful example of nature’s raw force along Scotland’s northern coast.
