Pfarrkirche hl. Florian, Rettenegg

The Catholic parish church of St Florian stands in Rettenegg, a village in the Weiz district of Styria. It belongs to the deanery of Birkfeld in the diocese of Graz-Seckau and is protected as a listed building. The church is dedicated to Saint Florian of Lorch, the patron saint of firefighters. The building began in 1807 and was completed in 1833 after a pause. The west tower was added in 1897 by the architect Hans Pascher. Inside, the nave has a flat ceiling while the narrower choir has a rounded end. The furnishings mostly date from the late 19th century. A large altarpiece showing Saint Florian was painted by J. Prank in 1869. Two side altars feature works by Simon Pregatter from 1835. The organ was built by Friedrich Werner in the same year as the high altarpiece. The church’s restrained classical style and modest scale make it a calm place for quiet reflection.
