Muppberg

The Muppberg is a 515.7-metre-high mountain near Neustadt in Lower Austria. It lies between Neustadt bei Coburg, Sonneberg and Heubisch. The summit holds the Arnoldhütte refuge and the Prinzregententurm observation tower. The Arnoldhütte was built in 1926 and enlarged later to offer year-round shelter. Nearby stands the 28-metre Art Nouveau tower named after Prince Ernst zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg. The tower’s sandstone pedestal carries reliefs by Emil Bunzel showing four dukes. The Muppberg’s summit can be reached by several hiking trails. The Prinzregententurm was paid for by local collections and opened in 1905. Its mason was Bernhard Bosecker, and the design came from his son Julius Bosecker. The Arnoldhütte began as a simple log cabin costing 2600 marks and became a managed refuge in the 1930s. Before the Reformation, the Ottilienkapelle drew pilgrims in the 16th century until it was demolished in 1533. Visitors find open woodland paths leading to the summit clearing. The Arnoldhütte offers a covered rest with seating inside. The Prinzregententurm’s viewing platform gives wide views across the surrounding countryside. Stone steps and iron railings lead to the top of the tower. Remains of the Ottilienkapelle’s foundations can still be traced on the slope. The mountain’s quiet forest setting contrasts with the tower’s decorative stonework.
