Sandrellhaus

The Sandrellhaus is a Montafon pair farmhouse in Tschagguns, Vorarlberg. Its two-storey stone dwelling dates from 1459, with a wooden-clad gable and painted facades below. The lower walls show faded frescoes: a frieze of animals with sledges, hares and deer, and the inscription ‘Dises Haus im Jar 1602’. Upstairs, older murals depict crucifixion scenes and a 17th-century saint or Christ figure, while a later panel shows the Virgin of Mercy from 1754. The interior keeps its original layout, with panelled doors topped by cube-pattern friezes and a cube-shaped tiled stove fitted with drying rods. A buffet cupboard from the late 17th or early 18th century stands in the room, and the parlour ceiling is clad in wide spruce planks. The kitchen still has its clay hearth and open smoke outlet, preserving the farmhouse’s 15th-century arrangement. Outside, the building sits among the Montafon valley’s alpine meadows and forests. Its painted walls and carved details offer a quiet record of rural life over five centuries, recognised by the federal monument authority.
