Twmpan Motte

Tomen Twmpan is a medieval earthwork mound in Llangors, Powys. It stands on a gentle rise above the village, surrounded by farmland and woodland. The mound was built between the late 11th and mid-12th centuries from earth and stone. Unlike many castles of the time, it lacks the usual defensive outer wall called a bailey. The Normans introduced this type of fortification to Britain from France, and the Welsh soon adopted the design. The site is recognised as one of the most important of its kind in Britain. Cadw, the historic environment service of Wales, has listed it as a scheduled monument under reference BR054. The largest concentration of such mottes is found along the Welsh Marches, including parts of Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. These earthworks played a key role in the region’s medieval history. Visitors reach the mound by walking a short path from the village. The grassy slopes rise steeply to the top, where a flat platform offers wide views over the surrounding countryside. The site is quiet and little changed since the Middle Ages. Standing there, it is easy to imagine the lookouts who once guarded the land from this high point.
