Feldkirch Neustadt 37

The Alte Dogana stands in Feldkirch, a town in Vorarlberg, beneath the old Schattenburg castle. The building is over six centuries old and has been protected as a historic monument for decades. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and altered again in the 18th century before serving as the town’s chancellery and archive until 1790. The structure was later used as the main customs office from before 1857 until 1912. In 2015 the city bought it and commissioned Marte.Marte Architekten to restore it. Since 2016 it has housed the municipal architecture office, preserving its heritage while adapting it for modern use. Visitors approach the main façade, which features a double staircase leading to a raised entrance with an arched doorway and 18th-century iron grille. The façade is dressed in corner pilasters, a mansard roof and barred windows. Inside, a discreet steel frame lights the converted attic and frames views toward the Schattenburg across the rooftops.
