Platt Fields Park

Platt Fields Park is a large public park in Fallowfield, Manchester. It sits south of the city centre, with Wilmslow Road along its eastern edge and the Curry Mile nearby. The park surrounds Platt Hall, a grade II* listed Georgian mansion. Gore Brook flows through the northern section, while the Nico Ditch runs along the eastern boundary. A pleasure pond forms the central feature, once used for boating and fishing. The pond has an island sanctuary and a boathouse, with a visitors' centre beside it. The park contains many gardens, each with a different purpose. There is a community orchard with ferns, roses and heathers, an educational garden, and an environmental area. Elizabeth II Jubilee gardens and an Eco Arts garden stand near the boating pond. A Shakespearean garden in the south-east corner holds only plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s works. Nearby, an arch from Manchester Cathedral’s nave, originally at Manley Hall, marks part of the park’s history. The Queen Elizabeth Coronation fountain, moved from Piccadilly Gardens in 2002, stands near Platt Hall. Visitors find a labyrinth, picnic areas, and two children’s playgrounds. Sports facilities include bowling greens, basketball and tennis courts, a mini soccer pitch, cycle paths, and a skate park. A BMX track was added in 2008 at the park’s southern end. The old boathouse now houses Platt Fields Bike Hub, offering bike repairs and hire. Three show fields host events like the Manchester Mela and Eid Festival. The park also has a veterans’ pavilion and a park office. Its varied landscapes and facilities make it a valued green space in Manchester.
