Vorau Abbey

Vorau Abbey stands in the rolling hills of Styria, a working monastery of the Austrian Congregation of Canons Regular. Founded in 1163 by Margrave Ottokar III, it began as a gift for the birth of his son Ottokar IV. The abbey sits behind high walls built in 1458, with fifteen towers and a deep moat to guard against invaders. Inside, the collegiate church shows layers of history: Romanesque after a 1237 fire, then Gothic, then Baroque. Swiss architect Domenico Sciassia rebuilt it in 1660–62, and Matthias Steinl gave it its final Viennese High Baroque form by 1700. The church’s interior glows with the work of local craftsmen. The high altar rose between 1701 and 1704, the pulpit followed in 1706, and Johann Cyriak Hackhofer painted the sacristy frescoes in 1715–16. Pius Fank, the abbey’s librarian and archivist, called the church the most splendid Baroque church in Styria. The abbey library, built in 1731, holds forty thousand books, two hundred and six incunabula, and four hundred and sixteen manuscripts, including the oldest collection of Middle High German poems. Visitors walk through the fortified gate into a quiet courtyard of stone arcades. The church’s tall windows let in soft light that catches the gilded altarpieces and carved confessionals. Beyond the nave, the library’s long room holds leather-bound volumes on dark oak shelves, their spines cracked with age. The abbey church still rings with daily services, while parts of the complex serve as a school, a tavern, and homes for canons. The walls and towers stand as they did when villagers once fled inside for safety, a reminder that this place has been both sanctuary and fortress for centuries.
