Kunstpalais Erlangen

The Kunstpalais Erlangen stands in the heart of the Hugenottenstadt, occupying the late-Baroque Palais Stutterheim built between 1728 and 1730 for Christian Hieronymus von Stutterheim. After two years of renovation it reopened in 2010 under founding director Claudia Emmert, doubling its exhibition space to more than 500 square metres on the ground and lower floors. Claudia Emmert’s programme linked contemporary art with literature, philosophy and film, while interdisciplinary events with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg brought the ideas into wider society. The Städtische Sammlung Erlangen, now part of the Kunstpalais, holds over four thousand five hundred prints, multiples, artists’ books and portfolios. It traces major international art movements since the mid-20th century and continues to grow through targeted purchases of recent graphics and photographs. Every second summer, in even-numbered years, the building hosts special exhibitions tied to the Erlangen Comic Salon. Inside the palace visitors find spacious galleries on two levels, with changing displays of prints, photographs and installations. The surrounding Hugenottenplatz offers a quiet spot to pause before re-entering the city’s streets.
