Pfarrkirche hl. Nikolaus Stubenberg

The parish church of Stubenberg stands in the village centre of Stubenberg am See in the district of Weiz in Styria. Built in honour of Saint Nicholas, it belongs to the deanery of Gleisdorf and is protected as a listed monument. The present building replaced an earlier church first recorded in 1217. The church was rebuilt between 1760 and 1766, probably under the direction of master builder Josef Hueber. A major interior restoration took place in 1972. The two-bay nave is covered by a flat barrel vault on sweeping wall piers, while the narrower one-bay choir ends in a semicircle. On the north side a square chapel is attached, and on the south side a sacristy with an oratory. The west gallery has a projecting balustrade, and the single-tower façade shows a slightly projecting central section with pilaster strips. Inside, the late Baroque furnishings date from the third quarter of the 18th century and were restored in 1957. The high altar painting of the Assumption of Mary was created in 1724 by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer of Vorau. Five bronze bells from the Grassmayr foundry in Innsbruck hang in the tower, four installed in 1949 and the largest in 1971. An alabaster epitaph to the Herberstein family, carved in the third quarter of the 16th century, was moved in 1856 to the south front beside the Herberstein crypt.
