Pfarrkirche St. Martin an der Raab

The parish church of St Martin stands high on a hill above the village of Sankt Martin an der Raab in Burgenland. It is a single-aisled baroque building with a tall, narrow choir ending in a semicircular apse. A tower rises above the west gallery, its upper part framed by Corinthian pilasters and capped by an onion dome and lantern. The church dates from 1746, replacing a medieval predecessor that had served since the 13th century. It suffered heavy damage in the Second World War and was rebuilt between 1947 and 1973. The interior features a barrel vault with lunettes over the three-bay nave, while the apse is covered by a ribbed vault. A simple gallery and a triumphal arch separate the sanctuary from the nave. Inside, the richly decorated high altar from the mid-18th century shows St Martin dividing his cloak with a beggar. The painting is by Johann B. Ranncher, flanked by carved figures of St Peter and St Paul. Two side altars also date from the same period, one dedicated to St Patrick with figures of Hungarian kings, the other to the Crucifixion with St Florian and St Stephen. The 1904 organ by Gebrüder Rieger has twelve stops, and the walls display 14 Stations of the Cross from the same century.
