St Edwold's Church, Stockwood

St Edwold’s Church stands in the quiet Dorset hamlet of Stockwood, beside a farmhouse beneath the wooded slopes of Bubb Down. A single-celled building, it was rebuilt in the 15th century and later touched by 17th-century work that added a small bell turret dated 1636. The porch still bears that inscription, while the nave shows Perp windows with panel tracery and a grotesque face on the turret. Victorian restorers mounted a piscina on the south wall outside, a small stone basin for washing vessels. The church is Dorset’s smallest and has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 1972. The dedication to St Edwold, a 9th-century recluse and brother of St Edmund the Martyr, makes this church unique in the county. Edwold lived as a hermit at nearby Cerne after his brother’s death, and local tradition suggests he may have had a cell at Stockwood as well. John Newman and Nikolaus Pevsner, in their Buildings of England volume, praise the church’s simple yet distinctive character. The interior remains plainly furnished, with no elaborate furnishings to distract from its historic fabric. Its Grade I listing recognises both its age and its architectural interest. Visitors find a modest but atmospheric interior, its whitewashed walls and plain roof giving a sense of quiet devotion. The small bell turret rises above the porch, its stumpy columns and carved face adding a touch of whimsy. Outside, the church sits in a grassy churchyard beside the farmhouse, with Bubb Down’s trees rising just beyond. The dedication stone and the inscribed porch date recall the building’s layered history. A short walk leads to the lane where Stockwood’s few houses stand, making the visit a brief but memorable pause in the Dorset countryside.
