Pfarrkirche Viehofen
The Catholic parish church of the Immaculate Conception stands in Viehofen, a district of St Pölten in Lower Austria. The neogothic building was completed in 1898 after a decade of fundraising and construction. It was raised to parish status in 1956 and enlarged in 1996 with a light-filled nave designed by Wolfgang Zehetner and Richard Zeitlhuber. The church’s exterior shows a steep slate roof and a tall spire above the main entrance. Inside, a three-bay nave has ribbed vaulting and a wooden gallery on stone piers. A marble font with a copper lid and a 1924 organ by Franz Capek add to the fittings. Three bells cast in 1950 hang in the tower. Visitors enter through the west porch into the vaulted nave. The north-east wall links to the modern extension, its white walls and grid of windows letting in daylight. The high altar sits in the one-bay choir with its five-sided apse. A statue of the Immaculate Conception from the church’s opening year completes the interior.
