Burg Auggen

Burg Auggen (Stadtweg) lies in the flat land between Auggen and Neuenburg am Rhein in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. It was one of two lowland castles in the village of Auggen, the other being Burg Auggen (Schlösslegarten). The site has long since vanished, but old records place it along the town path. The castle first appears in 1271 when half of Auggen village was held by the Grafen von Freiburg-Badenweiler and the Sermenzer family. The other half belonged to the Markgrafen von Hachberg-Hachberg and the Herren von Oughein, whose line included the Minnesänger Brunwart von Augheim. During the Neuenburger War of 1272–73 both Auggen castles were destroyed, though one may have been rebuilt later. Today the field where the Stadtweg castle once stood shows no visible remains. Walkers on the path between Auggen and Neuenburg pass quiet vineyards and farm tracks. The only sign is a small information board marking the vanished site.
