Church Of St David, Bettws

St David’s Church stands in Bettws, a village in the Garw Valley of southern Wales. The building began in the 12th century and was later dedicated to the patron saint of Wales. A charter from 1183 mentions the church for the first time. Most of the present structure dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1893 Olive Talbot of Margam paid for a new aisle on the north side, designed by G Halliday. A single roof truss from the original church survives in the porch. Inside, visitors see a painted wooden monument to John Bradford, a weaver who lived from 1690 to 1780. Wall tablets honour Rees Price, a Calvinistic preacher, and members of local families such as the Trahernes. The church was recognised as a Grade I listed building in 1997. Its quiet interior keeps the memory of these people and the valley’s past. The churchyard holds yew trees and simple gravestones. From the porch the view stretches over the Garw Valley. The building is small but full of detail, from medieval timbers to Victorian glass. It offers a place to stand and look at the landscape that shaped the community.
