Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt, Zwettl an der Rodl

The Catholic parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt stands in the centre of Zwettl an der Rodl, a small market town in the rolling hills of Upper Austria. Built in the late 15th century, it combines a late-Gothic nave and choir with a tall tower that was raised in the 18th century. The church belongs to the Wilhering Abbey and forms part of the diocese of Linz. The building has witnessed centuries of change. In 1623 the parish was transferred from Gramastetten to Wilhering, and in 1675 it became an independent parish. A major renovation in 1870–73 gave the interior a neo-Gothic look, while the 1997–99 refurbishment introduced a new mechanical organ and a modern altar by Marga Persson. The copper-clad spire was renewed in 2022, restoring the landmark to its full height. Inside, the late-Gothic vaults rest on octagonal pillars, and the west gallery shows neo-Gothic tracery. The 1998 organ by Josef Diethard Pemmer fills the space with sound, while the surviving baroque bell recalls the church’s past. Outside, a quiet cemetery lies 150 metres west, and a kilometre further on the 19th-century Ölbergkirche offers a place of reflection.
