State Museum for Carinthia
The Rudolfinum stands in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, a city on the northern shore of the Wörthersee lake in Carinthia. It is a Neo-Renaissance palace built to house the State Museum for Carinthia. The building was designed by Gustav Gugitz and opened in 1884. Its grand staircase features a capstone laid by Crown Prince Rudolf, giving the museum its alternative name. The structure replaced earlier collections housed in the Klagenfurt Landhaus and at Kardinalplatz. The museum holds cultural and natural science collections that began with the History Association for Carinthia in 1844. The Natural Science Association added exhibits in 1861, and both groups soon required more space. The new building solved overcrowding and became a landmark in the city. After wartime damage, it was restored and expanded in the post-war years. Today it forms part of a wider network of museums across the region. Visitors find a restored palace with a glass-roofed courtyard and a traffic-calmed street outside. Inside, displays focus on Carinthia’s earth history, nature and key historical events. The building also connects to the State Library’s modern research centre opened in 2019. Nearby, the Botanical Garden and Archaeological Park offer further exploration of the region’s heritage.
