Round, courtyard house, stone hut circle settlement and field system 275m north of Castallack Carn

Castallack Round is a small circular embanked enclosure near Castallack in Cornwall. It stands on a ridge overlooking the Lamorna valley. The site dates from the late Iron Age to the early post-Roman period. A rampart of large stones survives, forming an oval enclosure about 1.6 metres high and 1.8 metres wide. An entrance is visible in the south. A ditch once surrounded the round, but it has long since disappeared. The round once had a colonnade of stones leading from the entrance to an inner circular enclosure. This feature was recorded on the tithe map of 1840 but had mostly vanished by 1865. To the north-west lies the remains of a courtyard house. Its thick stone walls stand up to 0.9 metres high. The house has an internal diameter of about 7.5 metres. Visitors find an atmospheric prehistoric site with clear stonework. The rampart and walls are still impressive despite their age. The ridge-top setting offers wide views over the Lamorna valley. The remains of the colonnade and inner enclosure hint at the site’s past layout. The courtyard house adds another layer of history to explore. The site is quiet and open, ideal for a slow walk and close inspection.
