Schloss Gösting

Schloss Gösting is a Baroque palace in Graz, set at the foot of the Burgberg hill beside the Thaler Bach in the 13th district. Built between 1724 and 1728 for Count Ignaz Maria von Attems, it replaced a medieval castle destroyed by fire in 1723. The architect Johann Georg Stengg designed a summer residence with an older structure’s remains incorporated into the ground floor. By 1735 the interior was complete, and in the 1840s the French garden was transformed into an English park. The palace’s long main front is marked by a central projection flanked by side wings and arcaded corridors leading to square corner pavilions. The street façade shows elaborate stucco foliage, window cornices and vase-topped gables, while the courtyard side carries Rocaille vases and sandstone putti bearing the Attems and Leslie coats of arms. A monogram of the builder appears beside the central stucco ornament, and the stone shoulder-arched doorway is fitted with wrought-iron window guards. Visitors find a stately residence whose rooms still reflect its 18th-century origins despite later alterations. The park offers shaded walks among mature trees planted after the 1840s redesign. The palace remains in private hands, its exterior restored in the 1960s and roof renewed in 1967, preserving a quiet corner of Graz’s history.
