Ardmore distillery

Ardmore distillery stands in Kennethmont, a village in Aberdeenshire. It is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery owned by Suntory Global Spirits. The distillery was built in 1898 by Adam Teacher, son of William Teacher, to supply malt whisky for Teacher’s Highland Cream blend. Eight stills now operate, added in stages from 1955 to 1974. Until 2001 the stills were fired by coal, and the site once had its own maltings and cooperage. Ardmore’s whiskies are recognised for distinctive cask finishes and filtration choices. Ardmore Port Wood Finish is aged for twelve years before a final spell in port casks. Ardmore Triple Wood and Ardmore Tradition are bottled at 46% with barrier filtration to preserve flavour. Ardmore Legacy, a no-age-statement whisky, is chill-filtered at 40%. Ardmore also produces a rare 25-year-old single malt. Visitors find a working distillery with modern stills and traditional processes. The buildings include former maltings and cooperage, now part of the site’s heritage. Bottles carry images of a golden eagle, linking the whisky to the local landscape. Tours explain coal firing, cask selection and the reasons for switching filtration methods. The distillery’s setting in rural Aberdeenshire adds to the quiet atmosphere of a whisky-making place.
