Hafoty Wen

Hafoty Wen is a Bronze Age ring cairn near Cerrigydrudion in Conwy County Borough. It stands on open moorland at grid reference SH976536, a quiet spot far from roads and villages. Ring cairns were built by the ancient Celts to mark special places for ceremonies or burials. They differ from stone circles, which belong to a different period and purpose. Archaeologists recognise Hafoty Wen as a genuine ring cairn rather than a stone circle. Cadw, the Welsh historic environment service, has listed it as a scheduled monument under reference DE283. The site appears on Ordnance Survey maps simply as ‘Cairn’, using the standard term. Visitors reach Hafoty Wen by following farm tracks across the moor. The low stone ring is little more than a metre high and about ten metres wide. From the cairn there are wide views over the Clwydian Range and the Berwyn mountains. The solitude and the sense of an ancient landscape remain undisturbed.
