Capel Hiraethog Earth Circles

Capel Hiraethog Earth Circles stands on a moorland ridge in Denbighshire, Wales. It is a Bronze Age ring cairn, built by Celtic people to mark a special place for rituals or to remember the dead. The site sits at grid reference SJ036546 on open heathland near Cyffylliog. Unlike stone circles from other periods, this is a true ring cairn, a low circular bank of stones. Cadw has listed it as a scheduled monument under number DE043. The circle is small but significant in archaeology. Experts recognise it as a rare example of a Bronze Age ring cairn in north-east Wales. Its purpose remains debated, but it was likely used for ceremonies or burials. The site appears on Ordnance Survey maps simply as ‘Cairn’. The name ‘Capel Hiraethog’ comes from a nearby farm, not from any chapel. Visitors find a quiet grassy mound about ten metres across, surrounded by heather and bilberry. The circle blends into the moorland landscape without tall stones or obvious markers. From the ridge there are wide views over the Clwydian Range. The site feels remote, reached by narrow lanes and footpaths across open land.
