Ungartor
The Ungartor stands on the eastern edge of Marchegg in Lower Austria, beside the Morava river near the Slovak border. Built in the 13th century under King Přemysl Otakar II, it once formed part of a larger fortification that included a moat and drawbridge. The gate’s single round tower on the left side makes it unique among the town’s medieval defences. Its Gothic architecture links it to royal castles in Bohemia such as Písek and Zvíkov. Inside, a pointed arch window is among Austria’s oldest of its kind, while outside the façade still shows the stone slots that once held the portcullis. The gate’s design reflects the military needs of the era when Marchegg guarded the frontier with Hungary. Visitors find the tower rising beside the arched passage, its outer walls marked by small niches and the iron holes for the portcullis. The surrounding flatlands of the Moravian field stretch away to the river, and the gate itself remains the only surviving town gate in Marchegg.
