Schwarzer Grat

The Schwarzer Grat is a mountain that stands in the Adelegg range, a small mountain chain in the southeast of Baden-Württemberg. It reaches 1,118 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the Ravensburg district and the Adelegg itself, though the nearby Ursersberg is slightly taller. The border with Bavaria runs less than 300 metres from the summit, close to the villages of Eschachthal in Bavaria and Bolsternang in Baden-Württemberg. Two streams, the Rotenbach and the Eisenbacher Tobel, rise on its slopes and feed into the Eschach river. The Scheidach stream also flows from the southern side into the Wengener Argen. The mountain is worth the journey for its wide views across the Alpine Foreland and the Allgäu Alps. An observation tower at the summit gives visitors a clear vantage point over the surrounding countryside. The Raggenhorn peak, 950 metres to the south-southeast, adds to the scenery, while the Wenger Eggalm pasture lies below on the Raggenhorn’s slopes. The streams and small valleys on the mountain’s flanks show how water shapes the landscape here. A visitor finds a simple path to the summit where the observation tower stands. The tower offers views of the Adelegg’s rolling ridges and the distant Alps. Nearby, the Wenger Eggalm pasture is used in summer for grazing cattle, and the villages at the foot of the mountain provide quiet places to rest. The streams add gentle sounds to the scene, while the border with Bavaria reminds walkers of the region’s changing landscapes.
