Schloss
Schloss Adlitz stands in the centre of Adlitz, a village that belongs to Ahorntal in Upper Franconia. It occupies the site of an old motte-and-bailey castle built on a mound. The present building is a plain two-storeyed Baroque mansion under a low hipped roof, with a matching two-storey gatehouse. Part of the ground floor still comes from the medieval predecessor. The castle was erected between 1696 and 1718 by Christian Friedrich von Rabenstein. By 1783 it had passed to the Freiherrn von Seefried as a Bamberg fief, and in 1788 it was recorded as a Palatine fief. In 1851 the Seefried family became full owners, and they still hold it today. The exterior walls are simple plastered masonry, and the gatehouse arch bears the date 1718. Inside, visitors find the original medieval cellar vaults beneath the ground floor. The first floor contains family portraits and furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Outside, the gatehouse opens onto a small courtyard planted with linden trees. Beyond the moat, the surrounding village of Adlitz has half-timbered houses and a Baroque church.
