River Douglas

The River Douglas rises on Winter Hill in the West Pennine Moors and flows for 35 miles through Lancashire and Greater Manchester before reaching the Ribble estuary near Tarleton. Its name comes from Brittonic words meaning ‘black stream’, shared with other rivers in the north. Nearby reservoirs built in the 19th century supply drinking water to Liverpool and alter the river’s natural flow. The river drops quickly from high moorland, passing through reservoirs, aqueducts and countryside before reaching Wigan. It is crossed by major roads and railways, including the M6 motorway and the Manchester–Southport line. The Douglas once carried small ships after an act of Parliament in 1720 authorised navigation between Wigan and the Ribble. Remnants of locks remain visible between Parbold and Gathurst, though the river later reverted to its natural state. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs alongside for much of its length, meeting the river at several aqueducts designed by engineers such as John Rennie and John Longbotham. Worthington Lakes, now a country park, were built in the 1860s to supply Wigan with water. Visitors can follow the river’s path through open countryside and alongside the canal network. Grade II listed bridges, including White Bridge at Rufford and Great Hanging Bridge, mark sections built during the navigation era. The final stretch to the Ribble is tidal and used by boats transferring between canals. Wildlife habitats have been improved along the lower river, with saltmarsh created as part of coastal realignment projects. The river’s flow is steady year-round thanks to compensation water released from reservoirs.
