Burg Sonderbuch

Burg Sonderbuch stands on a hill called Schlossberg, 675 metres above sea level, south-east of Sonderbuch village. The village belongs to Zwiefalten in the Reutlingen district of Baden-Württemberg. Built in the 11th century by the local lords, the castle first appears in records in 1100. By the 13th century it had been destroyed and only earthworks remain. Wall and ditch fragments still mark the site of the former stronghold. The surviving remains include the flat-topped mound and the outlines of defensive earthworks. These traces show how the builders used the hill’s natural height to protect the inner ward. The site is now protected as a natural monument by the state. Walkers can follow paths that circle the hilltop and climb to the summit for a wide view over the surrounding countryside. From the top of Schlossberg the landscape of the Alb Mitte-Süd unfolds in every direction. The gentle slopes of the Swabian Alb stretch away to the horizon. On clear days the view reaches as far as the Danube valley. The quiet fields and woods around Sonderbuch contrast with the vanished fortress once built here. The hill itself, with its grassy summit and low stone markers, invites a short climb and a moment of reflection on the castle’s vanished past.
