Halkyn Castle

Halkyn Castle stands in the village of Halkyn, Flintshire, as a castellated mansion of buff ashlar stone. John Buckler designed the house between 1824 and 1827 for Robert Grosvenor, later the 1st Marquess of Westminster. Benjamin Gummow supervised its construction as the Earl’s architect and surveyor. The building served as a sporting lodge and occasional residence for the Grosvenor family. In 1886, Douglas and Fordham of Chester added an Elizabethan-style wing with a new drawing room and internal alterations. The architecture features castellated walls, towers, turrets, and many chimney stacks. Most windows are mullioned and transomed, giving the house its distinctive appearance. After the Grosvenors left, Charles Oxley bought the castle and used it for school trips and charitable events. The Grade II* listing recognises it as an early and well-preserved example of a castellated mansion. Visitors find a grand but informal garden and a small park from the original grounds. Walks wind through ornamental woodland, a terraced garden, and a walled garden. The parks and gardens are Grade II listed for their historic interest. The setting remains peaceful, with views across the surrounding countryside.
