Haus Anderhalden (Bregenz)

Haus Anderhalden stands in Bregenz’s upper town, a four-storey dwelling with a protected façade. Its core dates from the 15th or 16th century, though a newer section was added later. Once it operated as the inn ‘Gasthaus Zum Storchen’, a role that shaped its layout. The building’s modest scale belies its historical importance in the town’s fabric. Protected status recognises the largely untouched exterior that survives from the Renaissance period. The house carries layers of local memory. Arthur Hager’s 1974 study links it to the wider land-office network of the region. A 2013 award highlighted the façade’s fine condition after centuries of use. Its survival offers a quiet counterpoint to grander Vorarlberg castles nearby. The name ‘Anderhalden’ itself points to its former status as a small noble seat. Inside, visitors find a compact arrangement of rooms arranged over four floors. Original beams and doorframes remain visible behind later finishes. The upper floors once housed guests of the old inn, while lower levels served stabling and storage. From its windows the upper town’s lanes and the distant lake can be glimpsed. The building quietly stands as a reminder of Bregenz’s layered past.
