St Chad's Church, Hopwas

St Chad’s Church stands in the village of Hopwas, Staffordshire, a quiet place beside the River Tame. It is an active Anglican parish church, linked with three others in Tamworth and Leyfields. The building itself is listed at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. The church was designed by John Douglas, a Chester architect, and completed in 1881. Its walls are red brick with timber framing above, and the roof is covered in plain tiles. A tall octagonal flèche rises above the nave and chancel, giving the church a distinctive outline. Nikolaus Pevsner, the architectural historian, called the design “certainly an ingenious and entertaining building.” Inside, the church has a five-bay nave and a single-bay chancel, separated by the flèche. To the south is a vestry, and to the north an annex houses the organ. Services are held every Sunday, and during the week there are events for adults and children.
