Der Tröpfler

The Tröpfler fountain stands in Bremen-Mitte beside the Börsenhof entrance on Marktstraße. A bronze sculpture by Daniel Spoerri, it was first cast in 1962 and finally placed in 2004 after the Börsenhof redevelopment. The city’s culture department commissioned the fresh-water feature with help from the Wohnliche Stadt foundation and architectural guidance from Johannes Schneider. Spoerri’s design pairs parallel square bars that form a rectangle rising from a shallow basin. To these bars he attached meat grinders, and in some grinders human hands and feet appear to be turned. Despite the unsettling mix of kitchen tools and limbs, the work remains delicately structured. The artist himself, born in 1930, is a leading figure in object art and a founder of Nouveau Réalisme, best known for Eat-Art. Visitors find a small but striking fountain framed by the city’s commercial heart. The sculpture’s quiet play of scale and surprise draws passers-by to look more closely. Metal surfaces catch the light, while the trickle of water adds a gentle sound. The piece stands as one of Bremen’s listed fountains, a quiet counterpoint to the surrounding stone façades.
