Gairloch Museum

Gairloch Museum stands in the Highland village of Gairloch, in Achtercairn. It occupies a former Cold War building that once served as a military bunker and later a roads depot. The museum moved to this site in 2019 after operating in converted farm buildings since 1977. Sylvia Murdoch, Morton Murdoch and Kay Matheson led the effort to create a local heritage society. The museum grew from a small collection of donated artefacts into a larger space with library and lighthouse lens extensions. In 2020 it was named one of five winners of the ArtFund Museum of the Year Award. The museum preserves objects that tell the story of Gairloch’s past. Among its notable items are the Poolewe Hoard, a rare Early Iron Age bronze hoard found nearby. It also displays the original Hyperradiant Fresnel lens from Rua Reidh Lighthouse. A replica croft house shows how people lived over a century ago. The Gairloch Stone, a Class I Pictish Stone, is one of the few found on Scotland’s west coast. Interactive displays explore the area’s natural history. Visitors find well-organised exhibitions in a building adapted from its military past. Some thick walls and heavy blast doors remain from the Cold War era. The museum’s rooms hold displays on archaeology, farming, fishing and domestic life. The collections reflect the history of Wester Ross and the West Coast. A visit offers insight into the region’s culture and social history.
