Kleine Burschenhöhle

The Kleine Burschenhöhle is a narrow cave in the limestone cliffs above the Hönne valley. It lies close to the larger Burschenhöhle in the Karhof limestone massif, part of the Devonian rock layers. The cave entrance stands sixteen metres above the valley floor, measuring just eighty centimetres wide and sixty centimetres high. A short crawling passage slopes gently leftward before opening into a small chamber where visitors can stand upright. Inside, delicate stalactites and stalagmites glisten along the walls and ceiling. The cave’s eleven-metre length makes it one of the smaller caverns in the region. Its rich sinter formations show how water has shaped the rock over many centuries. Heinrich Streich described these features in his 1967 study of Sauerland caves. The setting within the Hönne valley’s steep slopes adds to the sense of isolation and quiet found underground. Visitors reach the cave along a short path through the woodland above Binolen. The entrance is barely visible until they stand directly before it. Inside, the chamber’s low ceiling and smooth walls contrast with the rough limestone outside. Light filters weakly through the narrow opening, casting shifting shadows on the sinter. The air remains cool and still, preserving the cave’s delicate formations.
