A75 road

The A75 is a primary road running along Scotland’s south-west coast. It links the ferry ports at Cairnryan and Stranraer with the M6 at Gretna, close to the English border. The road passes through Dumfries and Galloway, passing towns such as Annan, Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart. Most of the route is single carriageway, though short dual carriageway sections exist near Gretna, Dumfries and Glenluce. Several overtaking lanes allow safe passing in one direction or both. The road carries heavy goods traffic heading to and from Northern Ireland ferries at Cairnryan. The A75 carries up to ninety per cent of heavy goods vehicles crossing the North Channel to Northern Ireland. A bypass at Dunragit avoids the often-hit Challoch Railway Bridge, known locally as the most struck bridge in the UK. Transport Scotland has completed several improvement projects to widen and straighten sections, including a 3.6-kilometre stretch near Carrutherstown. Earlier bypasses removed the road from town centres, leaving older alignments visible as minor roads on maps. The Kinmount Straight, between Carrutherstown and Annan, is said to be haunted, with reported sightings near Kelhead Moss Plantation. Travellers find a mix of open moorland, wooded glens and farming country along the A75. The road offers views of rolling hills and distant Solway Firth in places. Service stations stand at Collin, east of Dumfries, and Castle Kennedy near Stranraer. The route forms part of the European E18, linking Scotland to Norway and Sweden. Drivers notice the contrast between modern bypasses and older single-track sections still in use. The road remains a key link for freight and visitors heading to ferry terminals in the west of Scotland.
