Lurup
Lurup is a quarter in the Altona borough of Hamburg, once an independent village. It covers 6.4 square kilometres and borders Schleswig-Holstein to the north and the districts of Eidelstedt, Osdorf and Bahrenfeld. The small stream Luruper Moorgraben marks part of its eastern edge. In 1927 Lurup was merged with Altona, and in 1938 it became part of Hamburg under the Greater Hamburg Act. The quarter has a population of around 36,500 and a high population density of 5,247 people per square kilometre. Nearly one in five residents is under eighteen, and almost one in five is sixty-five or older. About one in five residents are not German citizens, and the unemployment rate is 7.3 per cent. The average annual income is €26,665. Lurup offers five elementary schools and six secondary schools for a total of 3,343 pupils. The SV Lurup sports club has its stadium on Flurstraße. Public transport includes the city train station Elbgaustrasse and several bus lines. There are 22 day-care centres, 32 private medical practices and five pharmacies. The quarter also has 11,707 registered private cars and recorded 152 traffic accidents in one year.
