River Aire

The River Aire rises at Malham Tarn in North Yorkshire and winds 92 miles south-east to join the Ouse at Airmyn. Near its source it disappears underground at Water Sinks before reappearing at Aire Head below Malham Cove. The river then flows through Gargrave and Skipton, past old textile towns like Keighley and Bingley, and on to Leeds. Below Leeds the channel is canalised as the Aire and Calder Navigation, carrying boats eastward through Castleford and Knottingley. Near Castleford the Aire meets the Calder, and the combined waters continue to the Humber. The river’s long industrial past left it heavily polluted, yet recent clean-ups have brought back fish and wildlife. Trout now live above Keighley, while chub, dace, barbel and grayling thrive further downstream. Otters and water voles have returned, and white-clawed crayfish remain in upper tributaries. A project is installing fish passes so salmon can reach Skipton for the first time since the 19th century. Leeds once froze solid for a month in the Great Frost of 1683–84, when a fair with an ox-roast was held on the ice. Visitors can walk or canoe along the river’s varied stretches. In the Yorkshire Dales the Aire passes through limestone scenery around Malham and Bell Busk. Near Leeds the river is bordered by nature reserves such as Rodley and Kirkstall Valley, while the city’s Crown Point weir offers a historic crossing. Canoe and rowing clubs operate landings at Bradford and Bingley, and the canalised section east of Leeds links to wider waterways. The river’s name appears in charters from the 10th century, though its Celtic or Norse origins remain uncertain.
