Seebuck

The Seebuck stands in the Southern Black Forest, just south-east of the Feldberg. It is the second highest mountain in the range at 1,448.2 metres. The ridge it shares with the Feldberg is split by a shallow depression called the Grüble or Feldberg Saddle. From the summit the land falls steeply eastward to the Feldsee lake, where the Seebach stream begins. The Felsenweg, or Rock Path, cuts down the mountainside from the top to the lake, offering varied scenery and wide views. The Seebuck is known for the Feldberg Tower, a former transmission mast now used as an observation platform. Since 2013 it has also housed a small ham museum. Nearby is a Bismarck monument built between 1895 and 1896 from rubble stone, topped with a bronze portrait medallion. The unveiling in 1896 drew a special train from Freiburg and a crowd that filled the Feldsee bowl. The monument was restored in 2009 after eleven years without maintenance. Visitors park at the base of the Seebuck and find a nature centre called the House of Nature for the Southern Black Forest. A little higher up, above the main road, stands the highest church in Germany, the Catholic parish church of the Transfiguration of Christ. From the car park many walks lead to nearby ridges and valleys, including routes to the Feldberg, Notschrei and Hinterzarten. The steep Felsenweg remains a favourite for those seeking varied terrain and sweeping views of the Black Forest landscape.
