Church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin, Sompting
The Church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin stands on a quiet lane north of Sompting village in West Sussex. Built largely in the 11th and 12th centuries, it keeps much of its original structure. Its most striking feature is the Saxon tower topped by a rare Rhenish helm spire, a four-sided pyramid of shingled gables. English Heritage has given the church Grade I listing for its outstanding architecture and history. The tower’s stone pilasters and offset arch show clear Saxon design, though its upper stage may have been renewed in early Norman times. Roman bricks reused in the lower courses add another layer of age. The church’s story begins before the Domesday survey of 1086, when two villages, Sompting and Cokeham, stood nearby. William de Braose held the advowson at the time of Domesday, but in 1154 his grandson passed it to the Knights Templar. They widened the nave and chancel to match the tower’s width and added a large chapel that later became the south transept. After the Templars were suppressed in 1307, the Knights Hospitaller took charge in 1324 and extended the nave and built a south porch. Major restoration in 1853 by Richard Cromwell Carpenter repaired the roof and spire and improved the north transept. Inside, the flint walls and Caen stone dressings frame a single open space for nave and chancel. The north transept has rib vaulting with delicate bosses and circular piers with square capitals. The south transept, once a separate chapel, is linked by a 19th-century arch and doorway and contains a 12th-century font and a carved abbot figure. Fragments of Saxon and Norman sculpture remain, including a 13th-century Christ in Majesty set into older stonework. The churchyard holds the grave of Harriet Finlay-Johnson, the innovative headmistress buried in 1956.
